Why do my batteries only last 1 month and not 1 year as promised?

Which batteries do you use? I use the white Ikea Laddas or Panasonic Eneloop batteries and with them I get 6-12 months depending on how much I press on them.
If you use normal Ni-MH batteries, it is normal that they only last a short time, as they have a high self-discharge rate.
