I had the same problem. I had bought a cheap aux cable that was probably not good enough. A better quality aux cable (Jack 3.5mm from Vivanco) solved all my problems.

My speakers are connected via USB-C and work perfectly.
I therefore cannot judge whether a connection with a 3-pin cable works.
