When I set the detergent using the switch, the symbol no longer lights up on the display? Is it the effect, or does it only light up when the detergent is empty?

There's a (slightly hidden) button next to the on/off button underneath to activate. It's not activated by pressing it, but by sliding it back and forth... the LED should light up in the right position.
