Question about Singer Simple 3223Y

We tried the machine fresh out of the box. The upper thread kept getting pulled in several times. At the beginning we managed to get a seam now and then, but later on nothing worked at all. Is this a problem with the machine or have we set a parameter incorrectly? We could not make a seam with the same settings that worked before.
