This hard disk runs without problems on the MacBook pro (after reformatting), but not on the iMac... (mid2011). Is there an external power supply for this drive?

If it's the power, the only option is to use a Y-cable like this one:
Lindy USB 3.0 cable (A - Micro, 1m)

No, only possible via USB. And I don't think it's the power, but rather the formatted file format. Which operating system (version no.) is running on the iMac? Try HFS+, exFAT or FAT32 as formatting.
