Reviews talk about Thunderbolt-4, but Asus communicates on their website "only" about USB-4, also the signs for Thunderbolt-4 are missing on the back of the motherboard. The question now is this: Do I understand correctly that this motherboard does not have Thunderbolt-4 ports, i.e. only USB-4? My "old" ProArt X570-CREATOR WIFI motherboard has two Thunderbolt-4 ports on the back, which work fine with the Thb. audio interface. For all intents and purposes it is a TB. USB4 is 100% compatible with TB3 and TB4, this is because Intel has, as far as I know, released the specification to the USB consortium, which is free to implement it. The USB4 controller on the motherboard is an Intel JHL8540, effectively a TB controller. What changes is only the trade name and the certification. In practical terms it means you can use all TB4 peripherals. I currently have a TB3 dock and a TB3 monitor connected.
If I wanted to attach monitors to a dock, there are some limitations, which I think are related to the Asus architecture rather than the TB controller:
if you decide to connect a monitor to a dock, and the dock to the usb socket, this monitor will only work if you use an iGPU. If you use a GPU on PCIe instead, you will need to connect your GPU DP OUT to the motherboard's DP IN input in order to use it, which in practice limits the connection to only one monitor via the dock. No limitation if you use an iGPU, or if the monitor is connected directly to USB4 on the motherboard.
