Is this Arlo SmartHub base station really needed? I have access points all over the place, so I can say that I have much better reception with my access points than with an Arlo SmartHub base station.

Arlo has thought of it in such a way that technically nothing works without a hub.  The cameras do transmit via WLAN, but only to one that is generated and authenticated by the hub - nothing can be done manually, even if the WLAN itself is visible.

And the hub also creates the Arlo subscription, without which a camera (even if it were connected to a non-Arlo Wi-Fi) could only stream live, there would be no motion alerts, no recordings and no remote access.
