Is the appliance quiet? I would like to shave my son's hair with it, but he is sensitive to loud clippers.

Yes, it's silent, so I imagine your son should be able to tolerate it.
It's very subjective. A little loud close to the ear, but overall more of the buzzing, quieter variety. My Braun Series 7 shaver is a little louder and more screechy, higher-frequency. A Philips Sonicare toothbrush, for example, is a little quieter.
