As an external media player, I recommend the Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K.

It has a remote control with which you can also control other devices and if you connect it to a USB-C dock, you could even use Ethernet with it. The Google Chromecast comes with a USB-C power adapter.

Surely photos (jpeg/pbmp/jpg), documents (pdf/docx/xlsx), and PowerPoint presentations (pptx) work, as I have already used them. 
According to the manual, it needs a player for videos.
