Thank you for your question. No, a wifi connection is not necessarily required. You can also control the robot by pressing a button, there are three different buttons on the robot for this purpose;
1) CLEAN button to start cleaning.
2) HOME button to send the robot back to the station
3) SPOT button to allow the robot to clean any spot on 1m2.
Wifi connectivity has many advantages, especially with Roomba i7. It allows you to control your robot on the move via the app, create a cleaning map, restrict and name rooms/areas, let the robot clean room by room, create a schedule and much more.
