Is 7.1 output in the optical audio output? That's exactly what didn't work with my old mainboard, although I only use this audio output.

Yes. However, you must be aware that only "virtual surround" is possible via Toslink, the quality of which depends heavily on the receiver connected.

For "true" 7.1 and playback of uncompressed (lossless) audio sources, analogue or HDMI must be used.
