If you use the unit as an access point, can you also use the free LAN ports or is that mutually exclusive?

Yes, all LAN ports can be used, it behaves like a switch.
I also use it as an access point, my network access is on one port and various devices (Xbox, Sony TV, Media Center) are connected to the other LAN ports.
No problems so far.
