Garmin NiMH
If this "battery pack" (which apparently consists of 2 AA NiMH batteries) can be charged in the Garmin, can't you just insert two "normal" AA NiMH batteries with a higher capacity and charge them in the device? How is the GPSMAP supposed to know that it is a Garmin or, for example, Eneloop battery?
The Battery Pack is designed so that a small button is pressed which lets the device know that the battery is inside and can be charged accordingly. With normal batteries or enelops etc. the switch is not triggered and the batteries are not charged. However, this can be mechanically circumvented (see Youtube) so that enelops can also be charged.
