if i connect a blueray player via hdmi and then bring the sound via the optical output to a soundbar. the usrsprungsformat of the sound (e.g. dolby digital) is passed on.

If your soundbar supports the format. Clear.

Dolby 5.1 should work, higher formats (DTS, DTS HD Master) only work via HDMI, as far as I know.
