I want to measure my steps and heart rate with the Fitbit. Do I need the app for that? Buw wofpr does it need the app and with the subscription costs? That puts me off.

I don't like the way Google is behaving with this product - and I don't want my data to be exploited commercially by Google. In practice, Google should pay me for collecting my data, not the other way round.
I use the app without a plan. It also works and you can use it to collect the data you described. It is also possible to use it without the app, but then you can't compare your weekly development etc.
