I think there's a wrong setting in NAS ads. You have to pay attention to the total capacity mentioned in the specifications. Here it's not 48TB, but only 24TB. The whole point of a NAS is to set up backups for data storage. So the disks work in pairs and must have the same capacity, otherwise the larger disk will be limited to adapt to the smaller disk. So in this advert we're talking about 24TB of real storage and 24TB of backup capacity. It's vital that customers understand this NAS feature.

A NAS alone is not a backup, backups must also be made from it, the 3-2-1 backup rule should be observed. RAID1 is also not optimal because 50% of the storage space is lost for redundancy. It might be better to choose a NAS that can hold 5 or 6 disks and then set it up with RAID5 SHR, because if you use more disks, you can optimise the available storage by using smaller disks (6 x 8 instead of 4 x 12 gives 40 TB gross storage space in RAID5). Since an 8 GB disk costs less than a 12 GB disk, it may also be worthwhile to take a larger NAS.

The 48TB figure is not wrong. 48TB can be used, even if a certain part of it is used as a backup copy.

You are not forced to use the NAS exclusively with Raid 1. It makes no sense to use Raid 1 with 4x 12TB anyway. The main purpose of a NAS does not have to be for backups alone. A NAS with 4x 12TB can also be operated in RAID 5, which allows 36TB to be used.
