I read in a comparison that black or dark soils are not recognised and bypassed. How does it actually behave? Are there any ways around it?

The problem is colour changes to black, e.g. on carpets. These are interpreted as holes and are bypassed. There is no solution, but according to iRobot, the i and s series do not seem to have the problem:
