I have old passive speakers and want to connect them to my audio interface. However, I was told that this is only possible with active speakers or with a HiFi amplifier. My question is whether it is possible to connect the speakers to my interface with this device.

Loudspeakers always need an amplifier. Active speakers have an amplifier built in, passive speakers do not and therefore need an external amplifier. This Sony amplifier works great with all kinds of passive speakers. Just check first if your audio interface has a matching audio output to the audio inputs on this amplifier.
