Thanks for the question and thanks @Wagnermarco for the simple but ingenious idea. I first wanted to open the stuck iMac and have now decided on an external drive. The case didn't cost 20 francs and pressing the "Alt" key when starting up is no problem either. The device now runs perfectly and is super-fast! (iMac 21.5 late 2012 with Samsung EVO 850 500G and IcyBox via USB3-A, migration with TimeMachine)

I connected it with USB 2. The SSD is still faster than the internal hard drive. Alternatively, the 2009 Mac also has FireWire. However, there are almost no external enclosures for it anymore.
