I assume it needs wifi for the Home Connect. We don't have wifi in the basement of our rented flat, could it be bridged somehow via a hotspot?

Yes, the Home Connect requires wifi. Don't know exactly what you mean by "bridging hotspots", but in general you would have to extend your WLAN so that it reaches downstairs (with a wifi mesh this is possible, but I don't know how many floors you have to bridge).
