i am looking for an external cd drive for my mac. what can you recommend?`

Yes, the ASUS ZenDrive U9M is mac compatible and is also declared as such on the manufacturer's website https://www.asus.com/ch-de.... I bought the DVD burner in 2019 and have since replaced it with the Blu-ray burner Verbatim Slimline to be able to play Blu-ray. If a DVD burner is enough for you, then the ASUS ZenDrive U9M is a good choice.

Asus is an excellent brand, I own 2 readers, but unfortunately I can't advise you, as I don't know anything about Macs, I'm still a PC man!
