Question about Fitbit Versa

I am having some problems receiving messages from my mobile phone. Does the location service always have to be on to receive messages? I usually have it turned off, then I get messages in but after a while it doesn't work anymore. Then I turn on GPS, sync the watch with the app and then it works again, until after some time I don't get any messages on the watch again.... Anyone have experience with this?
