Here I found the following answer at Garmin

"Product models with the suffix MT receive traffic data from an OTA transmission signal via the integrated traffic radio receiver and the supplied car connection cable (receiving traffic data via a traffic radio receiver).

All product models can receive traffic data via the Garmin Drive™ app without a subscription (receiving traffic data via smartphone)."
