How can these radios transmit 10 km with 500 mW? I find this information misleading. In a realistic environment, you can only reach an average of 100-300m! Isn't that right?

Helpful answer

Possible and tested for direct line-of-sight contact. However, a thick concrete wall with reinforcement (e.g. air-raid shelter) can reduce reception to a few metres. Maximum range always refers to direct visual contact.
