Your assumption is correct.

The LGA 1151 has "so to speak" 2 versions. The compatibility depends on the chipset.

For the 6th and 7th Intel generation (Sky- and Caby-Lake) you need the 200 chipset.

For 8th and 9th gen. (Coffee-Lake) you need the 300 chipset.
