Question about AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

Hello, I have a question regarding the heat development of this CPU. I am thinking of replacing my Ryzen 7 3700x with this CPU. The question is, do I need a different cooler for this or should the Wraith Prism I had with the Ryzen 7 be sufficient? I would most likely undervolt the CPU anyway and hopefully that would give me a bit more leeway. Does anyone here have any experience with this?

Helpful answer

A few relevant stats up front:
Ryzen 7 3700x TDP: 65watt
Ryzen 9 5900x TDP: 105watt
Wraith Prism (3700 box version) Max supported TDP: 105watt

On paper, the Wraith Prism should be able to handle the heat of the Ryzen 9 5900x... However, this information does not take into account the "Precision Boost" settings. Precision Boost, an integral part of the newer AMD processors, dynamically overclocks the CPU. With the 5900x up to 4.8GHz... under full load and "Precision Boost" on all cores (all-core boost 4.6GHz is stable for me), the processor can generate over 200Watts of waste heat quite comfortably. The Wraith Prism is not designed for this.

Conclusion: Technically speaking, the Wraith Prism would generally work ok, as long as you don't stress the processor too much... Nothing will break, but the processor will automatically downclock or thermally limit itself and accordingly tear down your performance somewhat if the cooling is not sufficient... If at all possible, I would go for a larger cooler that is designed for 180 - 200 watts heat output... or an AIO.

Greetings

Kure.

never had a wraith prism so i can't answer this question...i use an aio in my system, the arctic liquid freezer II a-rgb(costs 120 francs at digitec)...pump inaudible, very quiet fan, aurasync, very good cooling performance....live in an attic flat,no air conditioning,in summer....in my build there are no pc fans installed because i use a dual aio system i.e. cpu aio and gpu aio in a corsair 7000 d airflow....have set the aio in the bios to 40% to 75 degrees, after that it should jump to 50%....very cool in idle i.e. 35 degrees-40 degrees when gaming in 4k max 65 degrees.
