No, I don't have a FritzBox and it works.
That is, the FRITZ!Repeater 2400 WLAN acts as a LAN, all other FRITZ!Repeater 2400 WLAN connect via WLAN with the FRITZ!Repeater 2400 WLAN which is connected to the LAN.
A real router will certainly provide more performance.
