Has anyone managed to boot from an NVMe SSD using this adapter?
I can only access an SSD installed on it when Windows is already loaded, and only if I have installed a driver (which is not included with this product!)...

The driver is integrated in Windows 10, it should not be necessary to install a special driver.
It is mandatory that UEFI is activated in the BIOS and CSM is possibly completely deactivated so that booting from NVMe works. 
I recommend doing a BIOS update first, otherwise you might be fighting with UEFI teething problems that have long since been fixed.
If it doesn't work, just write again.
