Gygabyte's website says that this MOBO is DDR4 compatible and not ddr5 https://www.gigabyte.com/Thermal-Solution/Z690I-AORUS-ULTRA-DDR4-rev-10#kf . isn't this the same motherboard?

There are 2 versions of this motherboard. Aorus Z690 I ultra ddr4 and ddr5.
