For notebook users: Is it possible to operate the hard disk via a SATA/USB adapter? Or is it only possible via 'real' SATA III?

If you assume that external HDDs are usually slow and above all mechanical HDDs and we are talking about an SSD here, this should not be a problem. If you use USB, you can also get a suitable external enclosure. Also offered here

Do you mean running an OS via USB?
According to Manu1234's comment of 19.01.2017, this does not seem to work with this SDD.
ICY BOX IB-AC603U3 Adapter Cable, 2.5'' SATA to USB 3.0 can be used for example.
