Does this also work through thick walls and ceilings? I would like to use it to open up a basement room. I have a studio on the ground floor and a basement room that I use as an office, but it is not directly under the studio, but slightly offset in front of it. Could this still work?

It worked for me. My sauna is in the basement and with the repeater I can now stream music with the iPad (the base is on the ground floor; concrete between ground floor and basement).

Unfortunately, no generally valid statement can be made for this problem, at least not without knowing the building materials used.

Here are a few details on WiFi signal absorption:

I have also found that the (apparent) wooden floors and ceilings in old buildings can be particularly difficult. These are often filled with undefined material, a kind of cinder, between the ceiling and floor boards in the spaces between the beams for insulation. This can, under certain circumstances, completely isolate the WiFi signal.

Alternatively, the signal would have to be transmitted between the rooms / floors via powerline or Ethernet cabling and then "broadcast" with a dedicated WiFi AP.
