M.2 2280 works, I have these installed:
Samsung 970 EVO Plus (1000GB, M.2 2280)

Yes, this SSD works, but it makes no sense to use an SSD that is PCI-e 3.0 and the ASUS Rog Strix X570-F Gaming processes PCI-e 4.0 and is therefore faster.
