Does it show sms or WhatsApp messages in the right (transparent part of the cover)? Is there any way to change the display of the small LED so that I can see messages without opening the cover?

No, it does not show this. You can change the colour of the LED display. For example, I have red for insta and green for whatsapp and blue for fb. But you don't see the light when the cover covers the display. Unfortunately, Huawei didn't think much about this.
