Do wifi hard disks in the usual formatting have a limited data size of 4GB for transfer as with connection via USB, or is the file size theoretically unlimited when transferring via wifi? Thank you!
I have some films on the hard drive that are over 4GB in size. Saving is possible, but streaming with PLEX is not possible with such large files. PLEX requires computing power that simply can't be delivered on this small WIreless disk. It still works for streaming music.
But such large files can be streamed wirelessly via the mounted file system, for example with VLC or IINA. But even there are limits. 6GB films still work, but 10GB films then hang when streaming via wireless to my MacBook. There
I don't know, I've never tried it. But it doesn't make sense to transfer large files via WLAN anyway, because the WLAN from this hard drive is very slow.
In practice, I use this hard drive as a streaming platform for iPad and iPhone, and for retrieving and storing small to medium-sized files. I transfer files over a hundred MB via USB/computer, even if it is occasionally much faster with more effort. And of course as storage/backup for SD cards, which is really very practical when you are on the road and can work with the camera without restrictions.
This hard drive is usable, but still not recommended. Disadvantages:
- WLAN connection relatively unstable, especially in battery mode.
- Crashes are frequent in WLAN mode. Then you have to shut down the drive (several minutes), reboot it (several minutes), and hope that the system remains stable.
- firmware updates have not improved anything over the years
- relatively frequent problems with the file system. After plugging in, Windows often has to repair the hard disk first. This may just be due to the hard drive, other My Passport Wireless Pro may not be as bitchy as mine.
- slow WLAN connection, 2-3 MB per second maximum. But usually even lower, so that you always end up in critical situations (e.g. my train leaves in two hours. Will these few files still be transferred in time, or should I abort?)
I recommend a newer model with acceptably fast WLAN. And with an SSD.
