Do I need a 1 RCA to 2 RCA cable to connect my subwoofer (with 2 RCAs, red and white) to the Yamaha A-S501? Def Yamaha only has 1 RCA output, the subwoofer has 2 (NB subwoofer has been ordered but not yet arrived!).

No, you don't need a 1 RCA to 2 RCA cable. The A-S501 has a dedicated subwoofer output that is specially designed for active subwoofers. This output is monophonic and optimally transmits the bass management signal to your subwoofer.
If your subwoofer has two RCA inputs (red and white), you can simply connect a standard RCA cable from the subwoofer output of the A-S501 to one of the two inputs of your subwoofer. Most active subwoofers accept a monophonic signal on one of the two inputs. Alternatively, you could use a Y-cable to distribute the signal to both inputs, but this is not normally necessary.
