do i have to install the device internally in the tower? it doesn't have any connection cables/sockets, what do i need?

The drive is designed for a tower. However, it can also be operated in an external housing, e.g. Icy Box IB-525-U3 (5.25").
you don't have to, but it would be advisable.
the discs don't like it when there is movement on the player while they are spinning at a few thousand rpm.
you will need a sata data cable and an appropriate power cable to connect the discs. then it should be ready to use.
