You can only extend a signal to a limited extent with one or two repeaters. The prerequisite for their use is a good output signal. If the signal is already bad with the first repeater, it will be even worse with the second! A repeater is always the last choice, especially if you want to transmit and receive. If there is the possibility of an access point, that would certainly be the better option! But it also depends on what exactly you want to extend with the repeater? Internet, WPS, TV, telephony?
If you place the two repeaters next to each other, I don't think this will double the range. It would make more sense to arrange the repeaters cleverly to optimise the coverage.
