With the device you have several options. Home network access via wifi to shared files from windows folders or files you have to explicitly share in the network or via a network hard drive as a central storage location, I have a Synology DS218j, 2-bay NAS in the network on which I store everything.
Have access via w-lan with all devices mobile phone, tablet, pc, tv etc.
Use it for UPC in the bedroom to install app and watch TV without any cable hassle. swisscom works too.
