Can I also use the RED as a hard drive or can it only be used as a NAS?
Of course, you can also use the hard drive (it is an "ordinary 3.5" SATA hard drive) for other devices like PCs, servers, etc. In contrast to the Black, Green, Blue and Purple series, the Red series from WD is designed for 24-hour operation and can be used in a Raid without any problems thanks to TLER. Alternatively, WD's Red Pro or RE(4) series would be recommendable, but they cost a little more :)
I find the volume, the sound and the vibrations unbearable with the 8 TB, I probably couldn't stand it in my PC, at least you can put the NAS somewhere else. 6 TB is much better, they also advertise a special bearing for as little vibration as possible.
Performance, power consumption, price, RPM...? There are more suitable solutions for normal desktop use.
The RED series can basically be used in the desktop PC. However, since it was designed for NAS, it is somewhat more expensive, but the performance is also somewhat better.
I've been using the RED in my destop for 3 years now because it runs 24/7 and I highly recommend it, maybe a bit expensive but the WD red is also a very good desktop HDD ;-) The disadvantages that the RED is designed for NAS do not arise at all.
Western Digital Red HDs are designed for NAS (24h operation, we nice sleep, restart). WD offers specific product lines for desktop and mobile (Blue, Black, ...). I would definitely not use the Red series in a desktop or mobile, the eternal sleep, standby mode would shorten the life span in my opinion.
