I have not tried this. In my opinion, a RAID is only a real RAID in terms of hardware, i.e. a chip that places a RAID over 4 discs of the same size for a RAID5, etc. You can probably do everything via SW. But in my experience, the SW RAIDs of the mainboards are not stable either, corrupt file systems and so on. I recently bought the ICY BOX IB-RD3680SU3. It can do 2x RAID5. I have equipped it with my 4 old 4TB and 4 new 6TB Toshiba NAS N300 (because it is cheap and very fast, but needs many watts). Good luck.
