However, according to the data sheet, battery operation does not seem possible. There is only a 'backup' battery so that the time does not drop out in the event of a power failure. Can you clarify this?

That is correct. The battery only serves as a back-up in case of a power failure. We have forwarded this so that it can be adjusted.
