Question about WD Elements

A little confusion: I bought the HD 3 TB for a friend who wants to back up data from a Windows 7 laptop. Now it says on the packaging that the HD is designed for MacOS or Windows 10/8.1. Does this mean that I will have difficulties backing up data on an older operating system?

It makes absolutely no difference. The disk should be formatted as NTFS anyway (standard format for Windows devices), but if you want to connect it to a Mac later on, you should format it as FAT or exFAT, because macOS cannot read NTFS.
