In the early days of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), the regiment's HQ of the Red Army of Workers and Peasants (RKKA) consisted of 8 senior officers, a secretary with the rank of First Sergeant, and two civilian employees. The role of the HQ was to manage regiment units and coordinate their actions with higher commands and neighboring troops. The standard weapon of the staff officers in the RKKA was primarily the TT pistol.

The 76 mm tank gun L-11, mounted on the KV, proved to be insufficiently powerful to deal with bunkers or other fortifications.
