The 76 mm tank gun L-11, mounted on the KV, proved to be insufficiently powerful to deal with bunkers or other fortifications. A new KV-2 tank, equipped in the turret with the M-10 152 mm howitzer, was designed for the destruction of military defensive structures. Production of the KV-2 began in 1940. However, shortly after the start of World War II in Russia, production was halted as this single-purpose tank was an exorbitant luxury under the harsh conditions of the early war phase. The KV-2 with its 152 mm gun was one of the most powerful Soviet tanks in the early stages of World War II.
