The combustion engine car is a classic and has shaped the automobile industry for over a century. A distinction is made between diesel and petrol engines. Cars with diesel engines are usually slightly more expensive than petrol engines, but often they are more economical when it comes to fuel consumption and offer better performance at low revs. Compared to electric motors, both types cause CO2 emissions and are therefore subject to a controversial debate about their negative impact on the environment.
The best-selling cars in Switzerland are produced by German manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen and by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota. The brands Skoda, Seat, Dacia and Fiat are also popular. The Swiss prefer compact cars such as the VW Golf or the Audi A3 or estate cars such as the Skoda Octavia.

What to look out for when buying a car? Besides the choice of the vehicle, there are some important topics to consider when buying a car. Registration: In Switzerland, you can't just drive off after buying a car. You need a number plate and a corresponding valid vehicle registration document. Both are handed to you by the cantonal road traffic office from as soon as you have proof of insurance. If you buy a car on Galaxus, our partner takes over all steps and charges for the registration of your vehicle.

Insurance: In Switzerland, it is compulsory to have a third party insurance. There are numerous car insurance providers in Switzerland. Insurance rates vary depending on vehicle class, mileage per year and the driver's age and place of residence. Comparison websites offer a good overview of the different providers.

Manufacturer warranty: All cars manufactured in the EU come with a manufacturer's warranty of at least 24 months, which covers the most important components. The exact duration and the exact components are specific to each manufacturer. The manufacturer's warranty is independent of where you buy a car. On top of this, you have the possibility to take out warranty extensions and/or additions at a corresponding surcharge. Wear and tear parts or accident damage (insurance) are not covered in the manufacturer's warranty.

Service: Cars need regular service. Service intervals and any required work are written down in detail by the manufacturer in the service booklet or electronically. Any required work can be carried out in Switzerland by independent garages or brand representatives. Some providers offer a service package of several years when purchasing a new car. This costs extra.
