AMD is releasing its Matisse "leftover ramp" as Ryzen 3 3100 & 3 3300X. I think that's great, since the silicon seems to be available. It's great that AMD has implemented SMT, i.e. 4C8T!
Since I can't understand the completely exaggerated price increase of the 3 3300X, I bought the 3 3100 for much less for testing purposes. The CPU is fast, very fast and insignificantly slower than a 3 3300X, which currently costs almost 40% more.
As with all Matisse Ryzen, the performance increase compared to Pinnacle Ridge comes from higher clock frequencies and the associated increased power consumption. Nothing comes from nothing. The 3 3100 package easily draws well over 80W at full load, the 3 3300X will not be more economical here, on the contrary. Temperature under full load also 80°C plus with a large Wraith Prism cooler. I don't think the included cooler is a good choice here ...
However, the CPU performance is very strong for 4 cores, almost close to Ryzen 5 2x00 without X. But Ryzen 5 2600 or the Zen+ refreshed Ryzen 5 1600 (AF, 12nm) need measurably less power, get less warm, are easier to cool. And you can get the Ryzen 5 1600 (AF)(6C12T) for just under €100, which is noticeably cheaper than the Ryzen 3 3100 ...
the 3300x is built so that only 1 ccx is active, which gives an advantage for games over the 3100... this is where the price difference comes from... one for the 3300x has to be as good as for a 3700x (at least 1 ccx), this makes the leftover recycling much harder, for a 3100 2 ccx can be 50% defective (cores + l1)
