Product details
Balancer for 12V batteries.
In 12V batteries used in 24V or 48V systems, it often occurs during charging that the batteries are charged unevenly due to slightly different capacities. One battery gets overcharged while the other is not fully charged yet.
Consequences of this uneven charging state include:
- Sulfation of the battery that was never fully charged (capacity loss)
- Severe oxidation and drying out of the overcharged battery.
In both cases, the lifespan of the battery is significantly shortened. In 48V systems, this uneven battery charging is even more pronounced, as four batteries should ideally have the same voltage. When two or four batteries are connected in series, the charger can only detect the total voltage and not the individual voltages of the batteries. If the voltage difference in series-connected batteries exceeds 10mV, the balancer activates. The balancer draws energy from the connected batteries.
The balancer (also known as an equalizer) attempts to equalize the individual battery voltages so that the voltages of the individual batteries are always the same. During the discharge of the 24V or 48V systems, all batteries are then discharged evenly, preventing undervoltage of any single battery. Since 12V batteries always have slight manufacturing tolerances, it is strongly recommended to use this balancer in 48V systems. Otherwise, within six months, there will be significant differences in individual battery voltages, leading to premature aging of the batteries.
For a 24V battery bank consisting of two 12V batteries, one balancer is needed.
For a 48V battery bank consisting of four 12V batteries, three balancers are needed.
