Lummerland is not just an island with two mountains, but it is also quite small. One day, a package arrives for a "Mrs. Malzaan or something like that." However, there is no one by that name here. Inside the package is a small black boy: Jim Button. The little boy grows up and soon becomes too big for the small Lummerland. That's when the real adventure begins: Jim and Lukas, the train driver, travel with the locomotive Emma to China. There, they learn what an imperial rice table is and what happens when you get into trouble with the big shot Mr. Pi Pa Po.
