Polarizers enhance color and contrast. Reflected light often appears as a whitish glare that overshadows the colors in an image. A polarizer solves this problem and creates deep blue, dramatic skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces such as windows and water. Overall color saturation, especially outdoors, can be significantly improved.

A circular polarizer has the same effect as a polarizer and is used with cameras that have beam-splitting exposure metering systems, commonly found in autofocus DSLRs.

Area of the sky that is most effectively polarized with a circular polarizer: Point your index finger at the sun. Extend your thumb at a right angle (90°) and rotate it around the axis of your index finger. It indicates the area of the deepest blue from horizon to horizon.
