Polarizing filters enhance color and contrast. Reflected light often appears as a whitish glare that washes out color in an image. A polarizer corrects this issue, producing deep, dramatically blue skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces, such as windows and water. Color saturation, especially outdoors, can be significantly improved.

The polarizer is an essential general-use outdoor color filter that produces deeper skies and minimizes reflections in both black and white and color photography. Combining a polarizer with a red 25 filter creates incredibly dramatic black and white landscapes. It can be rotated to achieve the desired effect.

The Tiffen polarizer can be used with an enhancing filter for more dramatic effects and is available for wide-angle lenses. A circular polarizer has the same effect as a polarizer and is used on cameras with beam-splitting metering systems, commonly found on autofocus SLRs (for most 35mm autofocus cameras, refer to your camera manual).

To effectively polarize the area of the sky with a circular polarizer, point your index finger at the sun and extend your thumb at a right angle (90 degrees).
